BRINKE STEVENS

NOTfilms: So Brinke, when did you decide that you wanted to get into acting?
BRINKE: I never decided, I always say that my career chose me, I didn't choose it. I was a scientist, I had just gotten my masters degree in marine biology from Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and I had just moved to Los Angeles to marry my childhood sweetheart Dave Stevens. Well, the marriage didn't work, but I stayed in L.A. and was looking for a science job when one day I happen to walk by a casting office and I slowed down to look in, because they had all these posters on the wall. The guy behind the desk says, "You, come here. Show me what you've got!". And I'm like, oh no, I'm in the wrong place. And he put me in a movie the next day. That was All the Marbles, a Peter Falk film--I was just an extra, but i liked it. And then I answered an ad in Dramalog Magazine for Slumber Party Massacre. They needed like seventeen pretty girls to die horribly, and when I saw that I thought, wow, you know I could really do this. This is something I'd like to pursue. So, I took about five years of constant hard work, but by the late eighties I became known as a "scream queen" from my work in horror movies. And it's all kind of paid off, but I never set out going, oh I'm gonna be an actress, it was never like that.

NOTfilms: So, even though you didn't decide to become an actress, are there any actresses that you are influenced by?
BRINKE: I've always admired Jane Seymour. I think she's a wonderful actress, I love her look. And I've actually gotten to meet her in person. I was attending her fortieth birthday party in Santa Barbera, and got some photos with her, so it was a big thrill. I'm a big fan.

NOTfilms: Do you enjoy watching horror movies?
BRINKE: Yeah, always since I was a little kid I really enjoyed horror, science-fiction, and fantasy films, so it's really a delight because I get to do so many wierd things. I get to kill people and be killed, I get possessed by demons, turn into a vampire, fight mutant monsters. Where else in life can you have such kicks? [she laughs]

NOTfilms: Now, you also wrote your film Teenage Excorcist. First of all, what was it like working on both sides of the camera, and second, what was it like working with actor Eddie Deezen?
BRINKE: Eddie is exactly like his character in real life. [imitating] Hey Brinke, how ya doin'! He's exactly the way you see him, and he's hystarical. He's very funny, and a very sweet guy. Uh, I wrote Teenage Excorcist, it was the thrid script I wrote and sold, and I'm working on another one now as a writer. I did a sequel to Haunting Fear, called Bury Nightmares, which I sold last year, and it's the first movie I'm coming in on as a co-producer as well, and also the lead. So, that's supposed to go into production sometime this summer in California.

NOTfilms: Is there anything else in the works?
BRINKE: Yeah, besides that, I've shot three movies so far this year. In Iowa I shot Real Time, which is a crime spree drama. I play a pregnant cop caught in a hostage crisis, and that'll be done in September. And I also from there went on to San Francisco to shoot The Reaper. It's a throw-back to early eighties slasher movies where I'm the victim of a masked psycho while on a camping trip in the woods. Then I finished recently Full Moon's Sideshow, directed by Fred Olin-Rey, where I play a gypsy fortune-teller at a very dark carnival.
